Advancing presbyopia education through professional collaboration
From January 8 to 10, 2026, the Light of Shanghai Conference on Optometry and Vision Science and the 14th Myopia Care · SMILE Academic Forum were held. The Shanghai University School of Medicine Affiliated Eye Center (Shanghai Purui Eye Hospital) attended as a team and received several honors for its academic development and clinical work.
A major conference event was the launch of the Beyond Presbyopia Education Alliance. The center was named among its first member institutions, recognizing its professional work and influence in public education on presbyopia prevention and care.
Refractive team recognized for clinical and educational achievements
The refractive surgery team received several awards. Director Xiao Qirui won an Outstanding Presentation award for the educational video “Nine Years After SMILE: How My Partner Has Maintained 1.0 Vision.” Based on a real case, the video explained long-term safety and stability after SMILE and reflected the conference theme of myopia care and spectacle-free vision.
In the EVO ICL Elite Debate, Director Xiao Qirui progressed through several rounds and received both the Excellence Award and the Elite Debater Award, demonstrating his academic experience in phakic intraocular lens surgery.
Young physicians were also recognized. Dr. Yu Zitong stood out in the national SMILE Star New Year competition. Her SMILE surgical video was praised for precise technique, standardized workflow and careful detail, earning the Minimally Invasive Precision Star and SMILE Star titles.
Dr. Li Xiao and Dr. Yu Zitong jointly produced the educational video “An Ophthalmologist’s Journey to Spectacle Independence.” Told from a doctor’s own experience, it introduced refractive surgery knowledge and received a Finalist Work award.
Strengthening nursing exchange and standardized care
The nursing team also participated in the refractive nursing program. Nursing Department Director Hou Xiaowei served as an expert commentator, reviewing cases and offering practical recommendations. Chen Xueyan joined the “Smart Debate · New Perspectives in Nursing” discussion and exchanged experience on patient education and standardized postoperative care with nursing colleagues from across China.
Promoting scientific myopia prevention through public engagement
Beyond academic exchange, the hospital joined the conference’s public-service program. Xiao Qirui, Zhang Jie, Chen Xueyan and Dr. Chen Weicun took part in the 2026 Light of Shanghai Myopia Prevention Health Run, promoting scientific myopia control and lifelong eye health.
Held for more than a decade, the Light of Shanghai conference has become an important platform for refractive innovation and clinical exchange, attracting ophthalmic professionals from China and abroad. The center’s participation reflected its continuing investment in clinical technology, academic development and public education.
The center will continue learning from leading domestic and international practice, strengthening refractive surgery and ophthalmic nursing, expanding eye-health education and developing professional talent to provide high-quality eye care.
